Loretta Young (1913-2000) was an Academy Award-winning actress known for devout Catholicism and her performances in The Farmer's Daughter, The Bishop's Wife, and Come to the Stable, and for her long-running and tremendously popular television series. But that was not the whole story.

Hollywood Madonna explores the full saga of Loretta Young's professional and personal life. She made her film debut at age four, became a star at fifteen, and many awards and accolades later, made her final television movie at age seventy-six. This biography withholds none of the details of her affair with Clark Gable and the daughter that powerful love produced. Bernard F. Dick places Young's affair in the proper context of the time and the choices available to women in 1935, especially a noted Catholic like Young, whose career would have been in ruins if the public knew of her tryst. With the birth of a daughter, who would have been branded a love child, Loretta Young reached the crossroads of disclosure and deception, choosing the latter path. That choice resulted in an illustrious career for her and a tortured childhood for her daughter.

While I learned so many things about early Hollywood that have given me a new appreciation for those stars who "made it" what I read about Loretta Young left me disappointed in her. If this book is true fact and not a work of fiction, Loretta Young was not someone I would have wanted to know. Her treatment of her daughter was unforgivable. She was a selfish diva. If you love her, avoid this book.

Hollywood Madonna Loretta Young Hollywood Legends (Audible Audio Edition) Bernard F Dick Cira Larkin University Press Audiobooks Books Reviews

I would have enjoyed a more biographical book rather than an endless catalog of her films which numbered in the hundreds and they could have been tied in to events in her life more. However, I was impressed by her grit. She was a fascinating woman.
I was looking for a life story of Loretta Young and not more information than I can handle about production companies, etc.
I read this book when it was first released. However I remember very little about this book as there was very little of interest to remember! What i do remember is that the author only interviewed one of Miss Young's children, Judy Lewis. So again, we had to hear about Judy's "torturous" childhood. Without interviews from Miss Young's two sons, Chris & Peter, all objectivity is lost. Those readers who are quick to judge Miss Young's actions with regards to the conceiving of Judy will soon be able to hear Miss Young's side of the story(the TRUTH). Miss Young(the lady who she was & is) chose to remain silent because she did not wish to hurt her daughter. This is soon to change with the pending release of a new book by her close friend, Edward Funk. In addition to Loretta, Ed had relationships with sisters Polly Ann, Sally & Georgina, mother Gladys & best friend Josie Wayne. So Ed knows "the real deal". As Miss Young requested, Ed has waited for the passing of Judy for the release of their book.THE TRUTH WILL SOON BE TOLD!!
PS - Check out Chris & Linda's(LY'S son & daughter--n-law) website & facebook homage to Miss Young.
I liked this biography well enough, I guess, but found myself angry more than once because of the senseless errors throughout the book. This author is an actual college professor, apparently, and yet it seems he must have gotten some first year student gopher to do his research for him. Two glaring examples the author referred to Loretta Young entertaining the idea of a nighttime series called "Dark Shadows" when the show she was actually considering was titled "Dark Mansions." Very sloppy research. Not only that, he stated that Joan Fontaine passed on it also. In fact, Miss Fontaine did film the pilot. Another dumb mistake was his reference to "General Hospital" ending its run in the early 1980's. The last time I looked, it was still on ABC's daytime lineup. I could go on, but that would just frustrate me further and you get the general idea anyway. Who knows how many other mistakes there were with which I am not familiar? I really expected better. I was excited when I heard this book was coming out and so I purchased it. Live and learn, I guess. By the way, don't books have editors anymore? Apparently not.
Excellent!!!!!! Thank you
it is a good book but the description of her movie parts was so detailed and unnecessary. I skipped a lot of pages during this part of the book and moved on to the interesting stuff. I would still recommend it and the story of her life is very interesting
The book was enjoyable. However I think there is too much detail of the movies she made. The book goes into too much
Detail about the movies and not enough detail of Lorerttas life. There is very little said. About Judy Lewis and Loretta During
Judy's growing up years. I thought I would learn about Loretta
And Judy. This was disappointing.
